What Michigan home bakers can make
Cottage food law only covers foods that are safe at room temperature. That's why some favorites come from licensed bakeries instead.
- Baked fruit pies (apple, cherry, blueberry, peach)
- Pie crusts made with butter, lard or shortening
- Scones, muffins, hand pies and turnovers with fruit fillings
- Pumpkin pie
- Cream, custard and meringue pies (banana cream, lemon meringue, key lime)
- Anything filled with pastry cream

Before you order
- Holiday pies sell out; order a week or two before Thanksgiving.
- Ask whether the baker uses lard, butter or shortening if that matters to you.
- Pumpkin bread is allowed even though pumpkin pie isn't.
- Every home maker offers a chance to talk before you buy, in person or by video. Use it for custom orders and allergy questions.
