What Michigan home bakers can make

Cottage food law only covers foods that are safe at room temperature. That's why some favorites come from licensed bakeries instead.

  • Sourdough and yeast breads
  • Bagels, rolls and buns
  • Quick breads and muffins, including pumpkin and zucchini bread
  • Breads with herbs, nuts, or shredded hard cheese baked into the dough
  • Breads with dried or freeze-dried fruit and vegetables
  • Breads with fresh or frozen vegetables
  • Breads with soft cheese or large chunks of cheese
  • Sourdough starter itself (the bread is fine, the starter isn't sellable)

Before you order

  • Ask what day the baker bakes and when the order window closes.
  • Fresh bread is best within a day or two; ask about freezing.
  • Look for the ingredient list if you avoid milk, eggs or sesame.
  • Every home maker offers a chance to talk before you buy, in person or by video. Use it for custom orders and allergy questions.
